Your first international trip from Chennai: the complete checklist

Every year, thousands of families from Tamil Nadu take their first trip abroad. The excitement is real — and so is the worry about forgetting something important. This is the checklist we walk our own travellers through, in the order things actually need to happen.

3–6 months before: passport and destination

Start with your passport. Most countries require it to be valid for at least six months beyond your return date, with two or more blank pages. If yours is close to expiry, renew it first — everything else (visas, tickets) depends on the passport number.

Then choose a destination that suits a first trip. Places like Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand are popular first choices for good reasons: short flights from Chennai, familiar food, English-friendly environments and straightforward sightseeing.

6–8 weeks before: visa and bookings

Visa rules vary by country and change often. Some destinations offer e-visas you apply for online; others need documents such as bank statements, salary slips, leave letters or hotel bookings. Apply early, and keep digital and paper copies of every approval.

  • Book flights with sensible timings — arriving at night with elderly parents or small children is tiring.
  • Choose hotels in central, well-connected locations rather than the cheapest option far away.
  • Pre-book popular attractions; it often costs less and skips queues.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers medical emergencies — healthcare abroad can be very expensive.

2 weeks before: money and phones

Carry a mix of payment options: a forex card or an international-enabled debit or credit card, plus some local currency for taxis and small purchases. Inform your bank that you are travelling.

For your phone, compare your mobile operator’s international roaming pack with a local SIM or eSIM at the destination. Download offline maps and your hotel addresses before you leave.

Packing: what first-timers forget

  • Universal travel adaptor and a power bank (power banks go in cabin baggage, never checked-in).
  • Prescription medicines in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription.
  • A light jacket — flights and malls are cold even in hot countries.
  • Ready-to-eat snacks for children and elders who prefer familiar food.
  • Printed copies of tickets, visa, hotel bookings and insurance.

Airport day

Reach the airport at least three hours before an international departure. After check-in you will pass through emigration (keep your passport and boarding pass ready) and security. Liquids in cabin bags must be in small containers inside a clear bag.
